Nottingham

Nottingham is a city and unitary authority in the East Midlands. It is located in the ceremonial county of Nottinghamshire, England and is one of only eight members of the English Core Cities Group. Whilst the City of Nottingham unitary authority has a historically tightly-drawn boundary which accounts for its relatively small population of 288,700, the wider Nottingham Urban Area has a population of 667,000 and is the seventh largest urban area in the United Kingdom, ranking between those of Liverpool and Sheffield.

It is famous for its lace-making, the supposedly exceptional beauty of its young women, and its association with the legendary outlaw Robin Hood. It also has reputedly a high ratio of females to males, however official figured record it at 1.015:1. Nottingham was founded as a Saxon settlement and was later captured by the Danes (Vikings). A castle was constructed in the 11th century and the town grew around the castle. A large network of caves gave home to the poorer populace and these were used in the Second World War as air raid shelters. These are now a popular tourist attraction. Nottingham receives a considerable volume of tourism, with almost 300,000 people visiting from overseas in 2005 alone. Many visitors are attracted by Nottingham's nightlife and shops, by its history, and by the legend of Robin Hood, visiting Sherwood Forest and Nottingham Castle. Popular history-based tourist attractions in central Nottingham include the Castle, City of Caves, Lace Market, The Galleries of Justice, and the City's ancient pubs.

Nottingham Property Market

Nottingham City Centre, one per cent of homes are detached, seven per cent are semi-detached, 16 per cent are terraced, and 76 per cent are flats. In The Park, eight per cent of homes are detached, 19 per cent are semi-detached and 22 per cent are terraced. Eighteen per cent of flats are purpose-built, 30 per cent are flats in converted houses, and three per cent are flats in commercial premises.

Nottingham has quite a high renting population, with 27 per cent renting from the Council compared to only 13 per cent nationally. A massive 75.5 per cent of the total housing stock in the city centre (NG1) is flats whilst detached housing is found more readily south of the city centre in West Bridgford (NG2). Terraced housing can be found west of the city and close to the University (NG7), which makes sense given the large student population. Meanwhile, semi-detached housing is prevalent in the NG3 post code near the suburbs of Sherwood and Woodthorpe, NG6 (north west, near Bulwell) and the Carlton town centre (NG4), amongst others, and these districts may be particularly suitable for families with children.

Nottingham has seen considerable changes over the last decade or two. Already we have seen the creation of a tram system, the building of the new National Ice Centre, the arrival of the Axis casino/restaurant/residential development on the old Co-op site in Upper Parliament Street, and the £7m redevelopment of the Old Market Square.
