Sheffield

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wide economic base. The population of the City of Sheffield is estimated at 530,300 people and it is one of the eight largest English cities outside London, which form the English Core Cities Group.

A youthful vibe and a culture of music and arts provides the city with a unique atmosphere and streets brimming with cafes, clubs, theatres and museums, as well as a thriving student housing market. Economic revival within the city has seen house prices steadily increase and unemployment rates decrease in Sheffield.

The city is geographically diverse, located at the confluence of five rivers, with much of the city having been built on hillsides with views into the city centre or out to the countryside. With an estimated total of over two million trees, Sheffield has more trees per person than any other city in Europe: 61% of the city is green space.

Sheffield Property Market

Due to Sheffield's large university population there is an abundance of student accommodation and shared accommodation available. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University offer onsite accommodation, but the areas surrounding the campuses, such as Broomhill and Crookes, are also popular for Sheffield students renting.

Sheffield city centre will be graced with prestigious luxury apartments by around 2010. These apartments will be held in what will be the tallest building in Sheffield. This block will be a 32 storey high building situated between Arundel Gate and Peace Gardens.

Western districts such as Ecclesall, Fulwood and Ranmoor are the wealthier regions of Sheffield. Characterised by Victorian style terraces and detached houses, these areas have a crime rate lower than the city's average. Even more up market is the south western district of Whirlow, where mansions and detached houses are prominent.
